IUE Professor elected as a ‘president’
Prof. Dr. Aydın Akan, Head of the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Izmir University of Economics (IEU), who was featured in the ‘List of the World's Most Influential Scientists’ announced by a special research team from Stanford University, has achieved yet another success. Prof. Dr. Akan has been elected as the president of the Turkish branch of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS), the world's largest international biomedical engineering association.
Taking on a significant role within EMBS, which operates under the umbrella of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) with 427 thousand members in 195 countries, Prof. Dr. Akan will serve as president for a period of three years. During his tenure, Prof. Dr. Akan will work on organizing events and activities in the field of biomedical engineering at both national and international levels, as well as providing education to students.

Expressing gratitude to all colleagues who supported him, Prof. Dr. Akan, elected to the presidency by the votes of EMBS members in Turkey, said, “The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, based in the United States, is dedicated to developing technology for the benefit of humanity and is the world's largest technical and professional organization. It has more than 145 thousand student members and 344 branches in 10 geographical regions worldwide. The IEEE Turkey is also an active branch with many members. I have been elected to the presidency of the Engineering in Medicine & Biology Society, one of its branches. I am happy to have been deemed worthy of such an important and proud position. I want to complete my presidency with groundbreaking work.”
MADE A DIFFERENCE WITH HIS WORK
Prof. Dr. Akan is particularly known for his work in biomedical signal and image processing. In recent years, he has conducted research on the detection of conditions such as epilepsy, dementia, and attention deficit using EEG signal processing and artificial intelligence methods. He also continues his studies on neuromarketing applications such as emotional disorders detection. Prof. Dr. Akan has served as a consultant, project coordinator, and researcher in numerous projects to date. He continues to be involved in international scientific organizations as a committee member and as a member of editorial and referee boards for journals, contributing with books and articles based on his research.
